What is alexandrite and why is it so expensive?

Alexandrite is one of the world’s rarest and most expensive gemstones. It is a form of chrysoberyl crystal with unique and specific properties. These gems are known for gorgeous colour changes depending on the light source, ranging from green to purple to red. It was primarily found and mined in the Ural Mountains of Russia but those deposits have since been depleted. A limited amount of alexandrite is now mined in Brazil and Sri Lanka. Mined alexandrite costs $50,000USD/carat due to its rarity.

We love this gem and try to use it as often as possible in our designs since it is too beautiful to be worn exclusively by the wealthy.

Random Fact: Legend has it that Alexandrite is named after Czar Alexander II of Russia after being found on his birthday in 1830.
